EuroTrip - October 2009

While I intend to go back at some point and post some of the remaining highlights of the March '09 roadtrip, my upcoming European jaunt is imminent and I intend to post some (slightly less prolix) notes when possible. As before, I'm including a link to a map of the intended route. Please note that we will be traveling clockwise and the color codings indicate the means of transportation (legend available if you view in a larger map); we'll actually be doing planes, trains, and automobiles, though not quite in that order.

I'm embarking on this trip with one of my very good friends from high school -- realizing that we've known each other for well over half of our lives -- and we've started off with a minor ordeal attempting to reserve an apartment for 7 days in Paris. After sending dozens of requests to prospective apartments in the past week and being denied for all of them, we began to think that something might be up. My buddy finally figured out that we were trying to reserve an apartment during Paris Fashion Week. We had hoped to stay in the 6th arrondissement (administrative district) but had to settle for the 14th, which is adjacent to the 6th towards the south (the preceding link includes a map of the arrondissements, which are numbered quite rationally); we obtained confirmation of the reservation less than 24 hours before starting the trip. I'm not sure whether this is an auspicious or inauspicious beginning to the trip, but more details on Paris will follow once we arrive Tuesday morning local time.
